Is the thermostat faulty, or is the furnace not responding?

The display alone cannot decide. A setting, power supply, sensor, wiring or equipment fault may be involved. Record the screen, actual room conditions and recent changes before replacing the control.

Name the mismatch you can see

A blank screen differs from a lit one that says Heat. A cold room with a satisfied thermostat is a third problem. Note the room reading, target, mode and any message. Keep the control closed.

If the target changes on its own, check the normal user menu for a schedule, hold or app setting. Save what you find before changing it. If the problem began after a new thermostat was fitted, keep both model details.

Notice the air around the control

Sunlight, a draft or a heat source can affect the reading. Note if the mismatch occurs at a certain time or when a nearby appliance is on. Do not move the thermostat as a trial repair.

Compare the rooms. If the control's area is warm but a bedroom is cold, report both. A new control may not fix how heat reaches that room. The check needs to separate the wall reading from the warmth in the rest of the home.

  • Blank display, wrong reading or no equipment response?
  • New control, changed schedule or recent loss of power?
  • One control for the home, or several controls for separate systems?

Keep equipment compatibility in the picture

A thermostat must suit the system it controls. A furnace, a heat pump or a system with several heating stages may need a different setup. Do not choose wiring based on wire colors or a photo of another home.

Follow a battery-change procedure only if it is in the user manual and safe to reach. Leave installer settings, wiring and internal tests to a qualified technician. A screen that restarts does not prove the heat is fixed.

Ask what a replacement would solve

Before you buy a new control, ask where the fault lies: the control, its power or the system that receives the signal. Ask which model is proposed and why it suits the installed unit. Keep warranty and installation records handy.

When you call us, describe the screen and the heat in separate sentences. Mention a need for a key or building approval. Check the visit charge and repair approval process. A phone description alone does not confirm which part has failed.

More about this heating problem

Does Heat on the screen prove the furnace is running?

No. It can show a request for heating while the equipment has not responded. Note any airflow, sound or alert without removing covers.

Should I buy a smart thermostat first?

Establish the cause and equipment compatibility first. A new control may not solve an airflow, power or furnace fault, and its installation requirements must match the system.
